How to Update your Bathroom Countertops for $50!

Hello, Y'all!

I know it's been a while since I posted a new DIY project, but I wanted to start my next post off with a project we did a while ago. In our upstairs bathroom, we had this extremely ugly pink bathtub and countertop. I decided to paint the surface instead of replacing the countertop and tub due to the cost of replacement. It was a quick fix that made the space look amazing! If you need to update your bathroom with a cheap fix, this project is perfect for you!

Supplies Needed:

  • Tub/Tile Paint
  • Mask
  • Gloves
  • Paint Rollers
  • Small Paint Brush
  • Sandpaper
  • Painters Tape
  • Paint Tray
  • Abrasive cleaner
  • Sponge
  • scrubber
  • Fan

1. First, you must read the directions on the back of the paint box. You will have to follow these directions to a "T". Make sure to have all the supplies beforehand because once you mix the paint, you only have a set amount of time before it cures.

2.  Prior to cleaning, you will need to decide if you want to tape the faucet or remove it. I decided to remove it to ensure I didn't get paint on the faucets. This took about 20 to 30 minutes to remove. I placed all the parts in a bucket so I could reinstall it after the paint cured.

3. Clean the surface of the countertop or tub the day before you plan to paint. I would recommend using Ajax because it helps to get all of the soap scum off. I decided to clean the surface twice just to ensure all of the soap scum was off. Allow the tub or countertop to dry for at least 24 hours prior to painting.

4. Prepare all the material prior to starting to paint. I would set up a fan in the room and open up the windows. If you have small children at home, I would leave for the weekend. The paint is extremely smelly. I kept all the windows open. I closed the bedroom door to help ventilate the smell outside. Make sure to wear a mask as the fumes can become very strong. Also, make sure to set a timer from when you start painting. This allows you to see when you need to start the next coat.

6. Tape around the surface so that you don't get paint on the wall or bathroom vanity.

7. Lightly sand the surface. This will help to take some of the shine off the surface in order for the paint to stick to it. After sanding, wipe the surface with a damp cloth. Make sure to fully dry the surface prior to starting to paint.

8. You will need to put a painting sheet down on the floor and prepare the paint brushes and rollers. Make sure to put gloves and a mask on prior to mixing the paints. Now you can open up the paint cans. I poured about half of each can into the paint tray. You will want to save the other half for the second coat. Mix thoroughly before applying to surface. Do not put the paint on too thick as it will start to bubble.  I used a regular paint brush around the edges and hard to reach areas. Make sure to set a timer for one hour after starting. You will need to put a second coat within the next hour as the paint will start to cure.

9. Put the second coat on the same way as you did the first coat. Make sure you don't do it too thick as the paint will self-level as it cures. I would also recommend taking the tape off after you finish the second coat. When I took the paint off, there was an area which started to peal away with the tape. I just touched up the surface with a small brush.

10. Now you will just need to let the surface dry. The paint will need to cure for at least 3 days prior to use. I waited an entire week prior to placing anything on the surface. I then reinstalled the faucet for use. There were some areas where the texture was a bit off, but I really loved the way the paint looked. It does have a light texture but it helps add to the flat surface. I also caulked around the surface after I let the paint cure.

How does the paint hold up?

It has been a whole year since we completed the project and it still looks amazing. Makeup comes right off of the surface with a light cleaner. I do not use any abrasive cleaners on the surface. I stick to a vinegar based cleaning product.
